A mix young & old triumph in tough friendly against Dronfield

The 2s returned from their summer of hibernation to record a victory against a tough Dronfield 2s side. Starting with only 7 of the cup winning side from April we welcomed four colts players into the squad of 23.

We dominated in the forwards turning the ball over in the first scrum of the season. A fact that David Nevin repeated for the rest of the match, evening & probably until next Saturday when he will inform the Nottingham GEMS front row. The line out was solid for most of the game although some dubious 'not straight' calls from the referee spoilt David Nevins almost perfect day.

The highlight of the first half came from Corey Lawrence Lowther (it's a good job we don't print names on the back of shirts!!) when we won a solid set piece just outside of our 22. He received the ball from Cameron Howe and decided to run round the rest of Dronfield's backs to score a try with his blistering pace. Not bad for a 17 year old on his senior debut. The conversion was scored by Cameron Howe.

The only other action of note from the first half was when Jack Seymour - another 17 year old on senior debut, ran into their prop who might have been 3 times his age & sat him back down as he ran over him. I look forward to watching him doing this over & over again for the next 20 years or so.

Half time came & it was 7-0. Dronfield came out firing in the second half and the defence really started to shine as they persisted in pick & go's from the base of the ruck. When we did manage to escape our 22 we pressured their 15 who decided to run it out from behind his own try line, turned the ball over & let the backs take the glory with Corey Lawrence Lowther scoring his second try. The conversion was missed.

Discipline was becoming a problem at the breakdown and Dronfield benefited from this ill-discipline as they piled on the pressure towards our line. They crossed after a good 5 minutes of pressure & we lost Cameron Howe to the sin bin for 10 minutes for slowing down the ball.

We went straight back onto the attack from the kick off again turning the ball over just outside the their 22. Ed Moran received a half decent pass from James Feasey for about the first time in the game. The Dronfield defence watched as he spotted a gap, then threw one of his outrageous dummies before running as fast as his short legs would go. He went down under the posts looking for some oxygen before realising he needed to take the conversion. He did score the conversion to make it 19-5.

Dronfield again came back with the help of out poor discipline at the breakdown & scored two more tries before the end to make it 19 -15 at the final whistle. A good workout before the first league game against Notts GEMS next Saturday.

A big well done to the under 18s making their senior debut - Jack Seymour, Tommy Alabi, Josh Owusu & Corey Lawrence Lowther.

Man of the match - Ed Moran for putting up with some indifferent service from the scrum half & for his face when he realised no one was going to tackle him as he broke through a gap.

Male member of the day - Phil Moss for calling 'mark' after catching the ball in his own 22 after the ball had bounced. He confused the Dronfield winger so much that he didn't know if he could tackle him or not.
