Away at Mellish for triangular series against Mellish and Mansfield

In a change from the original fixture, Moderns U15s travelled to Mellish on a remarkably warm Wednesday evening for a floodlight triangular series against Mellish and Mansfield.

As Mellish are going through a period of rebuilding, the first match was Mellish/Moderns against Mansfield with half a dozen of our boys pulling on the green, gold and black of Mellish. This match ended 0-24 to Mansfield.

For the second match, Moderns played Mansfield. After a very strong 15 minutes with bot teams working hard in both attack and defence, Mansfield eventually broke through to score the first try.

As the game progressed, the over enjoyment of the summer holidays played its part and a few holes started to appear in our defence (as fatigue set in). This allowed Mansfield into the game and they eventually won 0-21.

So, into the final game of the evening, Mellish/Mansfield v Moderns. With no real time to recover, Moderns fought hard at the start of the game. However, Mellish/Mansfield realised that playing in tight and sending the forwards in, wave after wave, would create some holes and put Moderns on the back foot.

After Mellish/Mansfield scores a couple of tries through the middle using their big runners, Moderns got a drive going down the pitch. After getting the opposition on the back foot with a couple of challenging runs, Harry N spotted a little bit of space in the middle and, with some quick feet, broke through the middle to score under the posts. He then followed it up with a conversion.

Unfortunately, as Moderns started to get back on the front foot, the final whistle blew and the final score was 14-7 to Mellish/Mansfield

So, ended a great evening of rugby. Whilst the results didn’t quite go our way, the boys worked hard, created some good opportunities and, most importantly, played as a team and enjoyed themselves.

Can’t wait for our next floodlight fixture
